Hurricane Sock Party 2006 Questionnaire
After last year’s evacuation fiasco (thank you, Rita), I decided that this year I would be prepared for hurricanes in a better way. To be more precise: I would remember to put my knitting in the car with me instead of the trunk when I’m going to be stuck on the road for 30 hours.
So I joined the Hurricane Sock Party. :-)
And now … the questionnaire! This whole wedding-planning thing has got me far behind on everything else in life …
- Repeat after me “no hurricanes, no hurricanes, no hurricanes” . Okay we just had to get that one out of the way first. We needed to created a bit of “good weather karma”!
- If your pet(s) wrote a paragraph about you to describe you to us what would they say?
Clive would probably type something like this: “Erin is MEAN and ABANDONS me for EIGHT OR NINE HOURS a day. I cannot BELIEVE her sometimes. But then she makes up for it by having fun piles of papers for me to lie on and walk over and take naps on. And I have to admit that the soft sweaters and scarves and shawls and socks are fun to sleep on. Sometimes she also gives me lettuce from her salads, so I guess that’s nice, too. I liked the guy who stayed with me while she was away in California, and Erin seems to like him too since she’s always calling him ‘honey’ and things like that. Maybe he’ll stick around.”
- What is your favorite hurricane supplies snack?
Good question! Probably almonds or popped popcorn or something like that. I got sick of peanut butter after that being my only option in the car during 30 FREAKING HOURS of Rita non-activity. (Did I mention that already?)
- Do sock patterns normally fit you “as written” or do you usually modify them for size in any way? (other than foot length)
I think they usually fit as written. To be honest, I haven’t really knit many socks for myself yet.
4a. What are your foot measurements, not just shoe size? (Measure the length of your foot from heel to toe, then the ball of your foot. )
Shoe size: 7
Heel to toe: 9″ (I think)
The diameter of the ball of my foot, at its widest, is 8″
Are there any other measurements you’d need? - What one city abroad would you visit and why if money was no object? (and terrorism was non-existent)
Jerusalem! - Do you wear socks all year round or just during the winter? Do you prefer them tall or short or regular height?
I usually just wear socks during the fall and winter (I’m a sandals girl), and I like them regular or tall height.
- The last time the power was out during hurricane season (or bad weather of any kind) did you knit by lantern or were you lucky enough to knit to the hum of a generator? Or did you knit at all?
I think I’ve been lucky enough that the power was out while I was asleep! I knit almost every other time that I’m bored or at a loss for something to do and reading isn’t an option.
- Make a wish for your favorite sock yarn that you’ve already used once. What would it be? ? Dont be shy about listing an exact colorway or two if you’d like.
It would have to be any of the ArtYarns merino blends. Their merino wool blends are fine and soft enough that it doesn’t bother me, and the fiber pullaways are minimal.
- What is it about sock knitting that keeps you wanting to knit more and more socks?
Well … I’m not quite there yet. I think socks are very handy for knitting while traveling or otherwise bored, but I don’t have that compulsion to go buy a bunch of sock yarn. The interesting patterns and color changes of yarn are what keep me going!
- Make a wish for a sock yarn that you are dying to try but haven’t bought for yourself yet. (be specific, even colorway if you’d like)
Um. Um. Let’s say the Socks that Rock yarn in Apple Valley, Mist, Scottish Highlands, Lagoon, Jasper, or Star Sapphire.
- What size needles do you knit socks for YOURSELF with the most? Are they circular or bamboo needles? What brand?
I’ve been using 2s and 4s. I think I like the 2s best, and I might have to branch out into 1s! I use long circular needles because I knit Magic Loop style. I don’t really like double points all that much. I like bamboo and lightweight metal needles (like Addis or Inox or whatever they’re called).
- If you could only take 3 yarn related books and one previously knitted project that you love with you when you evacuated what would they be?
Can they be books that I don’t have yet and wish would magically appear? How about Mason-Dixon Knitting, Inspired Cable Knits, and a Debbie Bliss Baby/Toddler knitting book. My one previously knitted project — well, it’d have to be one of the few that I’ve kept (Clapotis) or one that’s almost finished (Eris).
- What knitting notion do you wish you had that you just keep putting off getting for yourself?
I just got myself a winder and swift, and that’s been the biggest thing. Maybe one of those cute sheepy measuring tapes!
- What is your favorite tv show?
Shows that are currently running: Gilmore Girls, Phil of the Future (shut up), My Name is Earl, and I’m out. I hardly watch tv these days! For older shows, Buffy, Bewitched, and The West Wing.
- Do you want a lacey sock or a “solid fabric” sock from your hurricane sister?
No preference. Surprise me, dear sister!
- It’s midnight and the power has been off for two days, its hot, and you have a craving for something sweet! What would it be? (This is a FOOD related question ladies! LOL)
Chocolate with nuts and caramel. MMMMMMMM.
- Tell us a story about any of your hurricane weather related experiences.
Since I’ve already talked about Rita, how about Andrew? I lived in West Palm Beach in August 1992, and we were a few weeks away from moving to land-locked Dallas. I remember we boarded up the windows, gathered our clothes into suitcases, and headed over to a friend’s house to shelter and wait out the storm. It seemed fairly quiet for the first part of the night, and we managed to drift off to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night hearing the storms outside, but woke up to the world still being all right up in West Palm. School started the next day, even.
- What was the one thing you wish you had remembered to get last year for hurricane supplies that you swore you wouldn’t forget this year?
Everything! I’d just moved to Houston from Dallas, and I barely had anything even ready to go. I didn’t even really have fallback supplies. I was really, really sick of that peanut butter. I think I’d pack up some more protein-type snacks and a LOT more water.
- What color sock would you like to recieve from your sock sister? (if you don’t have a pref just say so otherwise give us a hint!)
Well, I think you can tell that I love blues, purples, greens, and wine colors … so have at it!

EARL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You would think I would be most excited about the fact that you are knitting socks now, but I am more excited that you love Earl! HAHAHAHA!
Oh, I must do this. Knitting my socks in the car while sitting there in the middle of the night was about the only thing that kept me sane.
