SP5 Questionnaire

Yay, Secret Pal 5! Here’s a fun profile, and you can always find out more about me at my full blog, well.notes.

  1. Are you a yarn snob (do you prefer higher quality and/or natural fibers)? Do you avoid Red Heart and Lion Brand? Or is it all the same to you?
I don’t like most Red Heart, but I’ve got plenty of Lion Brand and Bernat in my stash. I can’t really shouldn’t knit with wool and most of my knitting is for babies, so those yarns have been good enough (and more practical) for what I want to do. I’m not going to spend $50 on yarn for a baby cardigan.
  2. Do you spin? Crochet?
Nope. I used to know how to crochet but now the only work my crochet hooks get is picking up stitches or doing invisible cast-ons.
  3. Do you have any allergies? (smoke, pets, fibers, perfume, etc.)
Wool — sad, isn’t it? Sometimes I can tolerate the wool if it’s a very well cleaned and processed blend, but the more natural it is, the more likely I’m going to have a problem. I can’t go into yarn stores for more than ten minutes at a time; my nose and throat start closing up. :(

    Also, smoke.

  4. How long have you been knitting?
I first taught myself to knit when I was about 10 or 11 years old. I started knitting regularly again about four years ago.
  5. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
    I do! Amazon
  6. What’s your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
I love vanilla, cinnamon, and pumpkin spice. I also love hyacinth, lavender, and “green” scents like cucumber, aloe, “rain”, and melon.
  7. Do you have a sweet tooth?
Oh yes. Esp. for chocolate, peanut butter, caramel, and combinations thereof.
  8. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do?
I scrapbook (very simply, using mostly different papers and some brads, rarely anything 3-D) and love photography. I’m very amateur at it. :)
  9. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
Mostly alternative, some rap (yes, really). I can’t stand country music. Some favorite bands/performers: Elvis Costello, Sloan, the Beatles, Chris Isaak, Garbage.
  10. What’s your favorite color? Or–do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can’t stand?
Blues are always winners with me. Greens are usually good too, and I like ruby and garnet accents. I hate oranges.
  11. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
Two cats — Clive and Einstein — and no other kids. No spouse, boyfriend, or love interest, either. I’m trying to live up to as many stereotypes as possible.
  12. What are your life dreams? (really stretching it here, I know)
World peace and sustainable crops for all! Personally, just to finish school and somehow figure out where I’ll be in six months.
  13. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with?
Without question, Lorna’s Laces Lion and Lamb. I made Clapotis with it, tragically felted it, and have never been the same since. Yes, the wool bothered me, but it was SO worth it. I think I would really like the Katia Diana yarn, too. Dell was using it for Tempting and I just loved it. I have some Classic Elite Premiere Cotton that feels like it will be great to work with, some Artyarns Ultramerino that feels great, and some Debbie Bliss Cotton DK … all feel good, all are waiting in the stash for room on my needles.
  14. What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
Wool like the kind you get in most Noro yarns. They’re pretty to look at but most of the ones I’ve seen in person have been the epitome of what I can’t touch. I can use some of the merino wools but otherwise I try to stay away from anything with wool as the main fiber.
  15. What is/are your current knitting obsession/s?
Baby sweaters/dresses/outfits. All of my friends have been procreating like mad, and Aunt Erin is doing something special for each of these children. I am getting more into doing things for myself, and I’m really fond of knitting in the round. I hate finishing and seaming.
  16. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I love doing baby items. They’re small, they’re cute, and the gratification comes a lot faster.
  17. What are you knitting right now?
Cozy in Berroco Cotton Twist (Black) for my mother and Kate Gilbert’s Samantha for my “niece” Kailyn. I have yarn for Tempting from Knitty, yarn for Audrey from Rowan, and yarn for another Clapotis. I don’t really have start-itis; I like seeing the end of projects.
  18. What do you think about ponchos?
Cute on very small girls. Well, some of them. The ponchos, I mean. Otherwise, I’m hoping the trend dies soon.
  19. Do you prefer straight or circular needles?
    Circs!
  20. Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
    Bamboo
  21. Are you a sock knitter?
I haven’t jumped on that bandwagon yet. I started one and it felt like the worst part of Sleeve Island, so I’ve never really finished it. Maybe if I had the right needles and good yarn and a good pattern? I don’t know.
  22. How did you learn to knit?
I taught myself from a book. They showed English and Continental, and I thought they were both ridiculously complicated so I figured out my own way. I ended up doing some variation that’s basically Continental. I was twisting stitches for a while but corrected that fairly soon into knitting revival.
  23. How old is your oldest UFO?
    Six months.
  24. What is your favorite animated character or a favorite animal/bird?
    Eeyore
  25. What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas and my birthday! (October 22)
  26. Is there anything that you collect?
    Books and dust. ;)
  27. What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
None. The only one I was really interested in was Rowan, and I’m not sure it was worth the price for me.
  28. Any books out there you are dying to get your hands on?
I always love books. I’m bad about looking at knitting books, though, because there are just so many free patterns that I love! I have found a few and put them on my Amazon wishlist.
