ARGH!!!
I am frustrated with myself right now and angry to the point of ranting profane words all over the place.
I don’t tolerate wool well. It tears my skin up, it makes me itch, my eyes water, my nose close, etc. I don’t use anything that’s pure wool, I don’t read felting patterns, I don’t know anything about the ins and outs of taking care of wool. I don’t even buy wool sweaters. My wool pants or coats have to be fully lined and with no wool actually touching my skin.
So, when I got ketchup on my Clapotis last night, I didn’t think about proper ways to clean wool. I thought about proper ways to clean a delicate garment that was 50% silk. “Oh,” I thought, “Gentle cycle, cold water, vinegar rinse.”
And I f#$%ing felted my Clapotis. I’ve spent the last half hour trying to at least save the ladders from sticking to each other, because really — what else could it do to it? Ruin it? Not bloody likely, that’s already taken care of.
Clive may have his $100 cat bed after all.

Oh NO! That’s *terrible*! My sympathies :( It sounds just like something I would do…
Oh dear–I’m so sorry. Your Clapotis was so lovely. I hope you’ll make another eventually. Clive will love this one despite its injured state.
A friend of mine just bought an unusual scarf–two layers felted together, one merino, one silk, each one with scattered holes (like swiss cheese). It’s quite beautiful. Any chance your felted Clapotis can be salvaged as something like this?
We should all be grateful for your post and use the greatest caution in washing Clapotis. I
wonder if the blend of silk and wool, and even the drop stitch construction, makes it more than ususally prone to felting?
I hadn’t thought about how the construction might make it more susceptible to felting … hmmm. I’ll have to think about that!
Too bad about your Clapotis, some folks are that way about wool, I think they all live in Texas. You could probalby make it out of a really nice silk or linen and it would still be lovely, of course, you can’t exactly throw those in the old washer either, but at least they would be comfortable.
a little late but still: that really truly sucks. i just stumbled across your blog looking for clapotis examples and yours truly was lovely!
i’m thinking about starting clapotis using south west trading’s bamboo yarn — you only need three skeins and they’re not that expensive — plus you can machine wash them.
